The weightloss diet problem

Almost every diet will work for a time. By their very nature, diets are short term things. They aren't meant to be maintained for life without entering some kind of maintenance phase. This is ok. The problem is that we often try to "fix" our weightloss problem and expect a miracle in the process.

And even if the diet worked. Even if we lost those 10 pounds before the class reunion there are some problems:

Temporary Weight Loss
Once they lose the weight, most people gain the weight back, often gaining more than they lost! They drink a weight loss shake, pop a pill, eat a special foods for a few months and lose the weight. But what happens when they stop? Most people usually start gaining weight again. The weight comes back. And then some.

Starvation and quick weightloss diets typically crash your metabolism. Your body becomes a "butter maker" instead of "better butter burner!"

So an effective weightloss diet needs to focus on boosting the metabolism through exercise and eating.

Losing Muscle and Water
Most fad diets lead to "weight loss" and not " fat loss." There is a difference. "Who cares?" you might say, "as long as I'm thin." Your metabolism slows as you lose muscle. So your body burns fewer and fewer calories as your metabolism slows.

Muscle burns more calories than fat. The right amount of muscle gives you a shapely, firm and more defined physique. Any weightloss diet that doesn't emphasize more (not less) water consumption, strength training, moderate aerobic exercise, and proper eating can lead to excessive water weight loss and muscle loss.

Hurting Your Health
People who have a history of yo-yo dieting do lose weight and look thinner sometimes. But they are very soft and "jiggly". They may get down to the weight they wanted, but they have more body fat, less muscle mass and no muscle tone. This type of dieting is notorious for weakening the immune system and promoting poorer health.
